embracing your innate beauty and perfection
Not knowing
Another of the spiritual discourses that speak so deeply to my heart. This one is by a woman called Unmani:
“Thought likes to think about the future and the past. To grasp hold of that that can’t be understood. To try to box and define things. Because that’s its nature. But what you are, beyond any idea of who you think you are, can never be boxed or defined in any way at all. So it’s an absolutely frustrating and impossible game that thought plays. But just hearing this being said, doesn’t mean that it’s just going to stop. The nature of thought is to think. It doesn’t need to stop. Why should it? What you are is never touched by thought in any way. Thought can think that you are in this body, you are a separate person, you are unenlightened, suffering. Whatever it thinks. But what you are is never touched, never defined by anything, any box that thought attempts to put you in.
When I say ‘You’ I am refering to who you are beyond any idea of you. This you. Another word for this you could be life, awareness, consciousness. It really doesn’t matter what word you put to it. Because it’s not about the words. Words just skim across the surface. Vaguely point. Who you are can never be defined by a word. Who you are can never be limited by a word. Or even a whole meeting of words. Who you are is simply noticing what is happening right now. This room, the sound of this voice. This thought, this sensation. Who you are is simply noticing what is happening. Not separate from it. So in fact the visual appearance of this room is what you are, appearing as a room. Appearing as a separate person sitting on a chair. Appearing as in fact, many separate people sitting on chairs here. The appearance of separation is fantastic, very intricate. It very much seems as if there are quite a few people sitting on chairs.
What you are simply sees this. What you are is never separate. Even though there may be an appearance of separation happening. This is simply an appearance. A play, as if we are separate. Knowing all the time that it’s simply a play. Which is why often, for quite a lot of people this message somehow resonates in a way that they can’t quite put their finger on. Thought doesn’t like it often. It’s often threatening. But this is already known, and that’s why it resonates. What you are is hearing what you are.
Thought will doubt and deny. But what you are doesn’t care. What you are simply sees the doubt. Notices the denial. Is untouched by it. This is always known. Never not known. It’s known right now. This is your voice speaking. So of course it’s known!”
